Requirements can differ by religion, area and situation, so please confirm the details with your local marriage registrar (Kazi) or the relevant office before the day.

Documents for the bride and groom

  • National ID card (NID) or birth registration certificate, with photocopies.
  • Recent passport-size photographs.
  • Proof of age. In Bangladesh the minimum legal age to marry is 18 for women and 21 for men.
  • If either of you was married before, the relevant divorce or death certificate.

Witnesses and guardians

  • Witnesses with their NID copies. Ask your registrar how many are needed.
  • Details of the guardians, where applicable.

For a Muslim marriage

  • The Kabinnama (Nikahnama) is completed and signed by the bride, groom, witnesses and the registrar.
  • Agree the dower (mohr) in advance and record it clearly, including how much is paid now and how much later.
  • Read every section of the Kabinnama before signing, including the clauses about the wife's rights.

After the ceremony

  • Collect the certified copy of your marriage registration and keep it safe.
  • Make a few photocopies and a scan for your records.
  • Update your NID or passport details if needed.
